Like human beings, cities have its own personalities. Some inspire ambition, others invite reflection. Some feel chaotic and restless while others seem clam, emergent or deeply tooted in history.
From the perspective of Feng Shui, a city is much like a living organism. It breathes through its roads, rivers, parks, architecture and the people who inhabit it. The mountains are the bones the earth, rivers are its blood vessels, and the movement of Qi (life force) determines it’s vitality. Modern cities add other layers to the complex structure of the city, buildings become organs, transpiration systems become arteries, public squares become gathering hearts, business districts become the mind, and neighborhoods become different emotional centers each expressing unique qualities.
A city’s energy is therefore shaped by three main intreating forces: The natural landscape ( usually surrounded with some kind of water source). The city architecture designs, and the collective human emotional consciousness over generations of joy, prosperity, conflict, innovation and transformation which leave energetic imprints upon the land. So just as every person carries memories with the body, every city carries memories within its landscape. San Franciso
It surrounded by pacific ocean where the water and qi flow into the bay, as the hills block some of the moist and wind allow the area to be the fertile ground for agricultural growth, green vegetation with fruit trees and nets. In feng Shui, mountain brings fire and population and water generate wealth. San Franciso grow big during the gold rash around the year 1850s with many settlers within United States, and overseas from Australia to China. It rebuilt after 1906 earth-quake and fire along with large immigration population; The social activism of 1960s created a generation of rebel-lists ; Later technological innovation of Silicon Vally make this city an innovative center of the world, constantly creating new wealth. This city carries an idealistic, brilliant and curious energy.
New York City
As the Hudson River brings the water from north into the Atlantic Ocean, New York sit right at the tip with the Long Island extend into the ocean, create a natural harbor , attract explorers with ships for landing and trading. Around the 1600s , the Dutch India Trading Company and English explorers came to New York, established the trading commerce center, and by the 1700s , New York become an important trading port. Later many immigrating into US through the New York Port of entry as US become independent from England. From first black slave brought to the port and to fought for freedom where the status of liberty stand in New York as the icon , millions of individual ambitions converge into one collective force that continually pushes forward. Its financial markets, arts, publishing, media, fashion and global commerce all contribute to an atmosphere of extraordinary momentum. New York with its determination challenges people to grow beyond their roots.
London
The capital city of England, it stands on the River Thames in Southeast England, a 50 mile of estuary where freshwater from rivers mixes with salter water down to the North Sea, and has been a major settlement for nearly 2000 years. It carries centuries of accumulated memory. It was founded by the Romans with medieval boundaries, it was the largest city in the world around1800s, one of the world’s largest ports , a major shipbuilding center, and turned into a major international finance and trade center. With the Industrial Revolution beginning in Great Britain around 1760, spread to continental Europe and the United States by around 1840. With machines replace hand production, manufacturing , increase use of water and steam power, the development of machine tools, where the output increase result into population growth, London become financial and business center, along with the railways in 1830s expanded the development into the suburbs. The Thams Embankment was one of the most ambitious public work projects in 19th century Lond that was built as part of the London Main Drainage system to improve public health, mobility and image of the British Capital. As one of the world’s major global cities, London express itself through architecture, arts, literature, education, science and culture. It feels like a well-educated and experience elder, steady, thoughtful and resilient.
Singapore
Singapore is an island country in Southeast Asia. It is called Lion city in Chinese name Danmaxi. It sits at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, bordering the Strait of Malacca to the west and Singapore Strait to the south along with the Riau Island in Indonesia, the Staits of Johor on North.
It was a maritime emporium- a trading post, in 1867 under British Control. After WW2, Singapore gained self-governance in 1959, later become part of the new federation of Malaysia, and become independent sovereign county in 1965, as the “Republic of Singapore”. Its leader emphasis on rapid economic growth, racial integration, promotion of business entrepreneurship. Singapore has developed into a rich, lush and clen city with major port, financial center of south east Asia.
Singapore does not feel like the lion city, but more of a turtle carry a city on its back, calculated, peaceful and enduring.
Shanghai
Shanghai represents of the world’s fastest modern transformation. Standing where the Huangpu River meets global commerce, the city blends Eastern tradition with Western influence. It locates at the southwest tip of China where Yangze river meets the eastern sea. Originally a fishing village and market town, shanghai grew into global prominence in the 19th century as a commercial port. With a nick name of Modu-magical city in 1920th. The reform and opening up lead by Deng Xiaopin in early 1990 lead to extensive development. It re-emerged as a hub for international trade and finance center, like New York, has its own stock exchange market, over the last thirty years, Shanghai went through a makeover with new dense high rises and host 30million population as of year 2026, the 5th largest city in the world. Now Shanghai is one of the ten biggest economic hubs in the world. Shanghai is a later bloom, ambitious, adaptable and internationally connected.
What can we learn from the cities?
Just as individuals develop personalities through life experiences, cities develop emotional identities through geography, history, architecture and collective consciousness of their inhabitants. Fengshui reminds us that our environment is never neutral, every space influence how we think, feel, relate and create.
When we understand the emotional energy of a city, we can make more conscious choices about where we live, work, heal and begin a new chapter of life.
So the question is never “ which city is the best?”, rather we might ask: “which city’s energy resonates with the person I am becoming?”
